Listening
Listen to the French language as much as possible - this is key
- have another look at our ideas for listening
to French.
Cultural differences
Perhaps tune in to some of the cultural differences
? not those anti-European and anti-French ideas that are drip-fed
to anywhere where the Murdoch media-empire operates.
There are cultural differences though. It is well worth reading about
how the Academie Française sees its role in “protecting”
the French language from English (and from feminists); completely
ignoring - we would argue - that the Norman invasion bequeathed 10,000
words of French to the English language; some ¾ of which are still
in use (see Bill Bryson, “Mother Tongue”, page 47)
And try this French joke:
Deux écolos, un Allemand et un Français discutent.
L'Allemand déclare: j'ai installé des panneaux solaires sur mon toit
et une éolienne dans mon jardin, c'est merveilleux, je produis mon
propre courant, je n'ai plus de facture d'électricité et je contribue
modestement à la sauvegarde de la planète.
Le Français répond: OK, … mais est-ce que ça marche en théorie ?

A little every day
Make French part of your daily routine. Listen to the French radio
over breakfast or during the day, read in French on your way to work
or during your lunch break. Listen to that CD in the car, talk to
yourself in French on your way home or in the bath or whenever you
have a moment alone. And watch films & DVDs.
Enjoy it!
Learning a language is fun and exciting! Why not make a holiday of
it and come on a French course in France.
